There are 3 stages of scaling a business:
1) I do it – do everything yourself.
2) We do it – you build a core team and do things together
3) They do it – the leadership team runs the business without you
Phase 3 is what unlocks unlimited income & freedom.
Here is how:
You start by doing everything yourself at location #1, working 80 hours per week and making no money.
Eventually, things start to click, and you build a small team. This frees up some of your time to focus on getting location #2 up & running.
Once you have 2 locations running smoothly, then adding 3, 4, & 5 isn’t a big deal.
You are still heavily involved in every aspect of the business, fully in the “we do it” phase.
With 5 locations, you’re making good money but have bigger aspirations.
Your best employee gets promoted to be your general manager to oversee the 5 locations.
The new GM spends 100% of his time on sales & operations compared to the 60% you could spend. This investment pays off. The store profits increase, and you’ve finally earned some freedom.
You can go on vacation without your phone blowing up.
Someone else is the first line of defense to put out fires.
You can add a 6th store under your GM’s oversight without skipping a beat.
This group of 6 units is a “pod”. If you can successfully operate one pod, then you can operate 2. If you can operate 2, then you can operate 4.
Once you double, processes that work at a smaller scale don’t work when you’re bigger.
So you break them down and rebuild. The new, stronger systems increase your capacity to double again.
We have 33 Midas auto repair franchises today. I believe our internal systems can handle up to 50, maybe more, before breaking & rebuilding.
