One of the 8-figure franchisees said something yesterday that struck me.
They use stories instead of frameworks when coaching their team.
One of their favorite is the question: “Are you the egg or a coffee bean?”
Both deal with the same situation.
You could say it’s “boiling over.”
The egg becomes soft inside and stinks up the whole room.
The coffee bean transforms and people sit together to enjoy.
When someone on your team is facing a tough situation, you have two choices:
Say “get it together.”
Or ask “Are you the egg or the coffee?”
The story helps them reframe the situation.
They step back and realize: “I’m not soft and stinky… I’m going to be the coffee.”
Now it’s their choice.
Ideally, they learn from the situation and make an easier decision next time.
Here’s what most franchise owners miss:
Every franchise business is in the people business.
If you want to build a massive business and make serious money, you must build an elite team around you.
But most owners default to frameworks, processes, and procedures.
“Follow the system. Here’s the checklist. Do it this way.”
Stories work better than frameworks for development.
Stories stick. Stories inspire. Stories help people make better decisions when you’re not there.
The coffee bean story teaches resilience without a 47-slide PowerPoint presentation.
I’ve seen teams transform by switching from “Here’s what you should do” to “Let me tell you about someone who faced this exact situation.”
