I studied finance, entrepreneurship, and software development in college.
My friends got jobs at Google, Goldman Sachs, General Electric, Boeing, etc.
I felt embarrassed to say I was getting into franchising.
I used to think franchising was elementary — a business on training wheels is something you do when you aren’t ready (or able) to play at a higher level.
“Franchising is for losers”
“That’s not real entrepreneurship.”
“That’s a business with training wheels”
But I was missing something fundamental.
Elementary school teaches us the basics. The building blocks. The foundations that make everything else possible.
Franchising does the same thing. It simplifies running a business by removing as much complexity as possible.
The franchisor handles the branding, marketing, supply chain, R&D of new products/services, real estate site selection, technology, national relationships, & more.
This leaves you to focus on one thing: execution.
I bought my first franchise in 2016.
In 2024 we did almost $45M in revenue across multiple brands.
Our goal is $60M in 2025 as we continue to grow same-store sales, acquire existing, develop new, and diversify into other brands.
At this rate, we have a path to $100M per year before 2030.
People can say or think whatever they want about owning a franchise.
I don’t care if my name is on the building or if I’m never featured in Entrepreneur magazine, or don’t win some 40 under 40 bullshit.
I care about building a strong cash-flowing business, providing well-paying jobs for 200+ families, and making a real difference in our community.
A word of caution: simple (elementary) does not mean easy
Simple = less moving parts
Easy = without effort
Every business, franchise or not, requires a lot of work to build. The franchisor provides the tools, support, and playbook, but it’s still up to each owner to execute.
You’ll probably work 3X as hard in the early years and make 3X less than your previous job.
But that’s okay since you’re not doing this for the short-term gain. You’re doing this to build a foundation for the rest of your life.
