You’re in a knife fight when you start a business
It’s exhausting, risky, and exciting.
You do everything yourself – estimating, sales, operation & admin. You aren’t thinking about building your empire or fancy KPI’s. All you care about is survival.
After you make it through alive, you graduate to Phase 2: “We do it”
The core team is starting to come together of people who have some tenure and gained your trust.
They can take some responsibilities off your plate, which gets you out of the knife fight.
Now, you’ve got time to dive into your P&L to find margin improvement. You can analyze the different marketing channels to see where you get the best ROI.
You’re hiring a virtual assistant to take over low-value admin tasks.
You start building a talent pipeline and can think about forward-hiring people before it becomes urgent.
Expanding into new locations doesn’t seem as overwhelming anymore.
It can be emotionally challenging to watch others do things differently (and sometimes better) than you did.
The key is to value PROGRESS over PERFECTION.
Resist the urge to jump in and micromanage everything. That won’t help your team get better.
The business owner is the biggest bottleneck in every business.
Instead, set clear expectations and a quick feedback loop. It’s okay that people make mistakes as long as they improve next time.
Unfortunately, most business owners stall out in this “we do it” phase. They cannot fully let go to move to the “they do it” phase.
The final stage is what unlocks unlimited income & freedom (more on that tomorrow)
