Most franchise owners think they’re building a business.
They’re actually building a job with more stress and longer hours.
The difference?
Your ability to find and develop leaders vs. hire followers.
Here’s what I mean:
When you hire followers, you get people who:
- Wait for instructions
- Escalate every decision to you
- Clock in and clock out mentally
- View the business as “yours,” not “ours”
When you develop leaders, you get people who:
- Solve problems before they reach you
- Make decisions within clear parameters
- Care about outcomes, not just tasks
- Take ownership of results
Here’s the math that matters:
With followers, your capacity is limited by your personal involvement.
Revenue plateaus because everything flows through you.
With leaders, your capacity multiplies.
Revenue can grow exponentially because capable people are making good decisions in your absence.
But Brian, I don’t have the budget to hire great leaders!
You can find great leaders at every level.
We hired a maintenance guy 10 years ago for $12 per hour.
He was a hard worker, smart, a team player, and very friendly. He had all the qualities I’m looking for in a leader.
After a few months, we promoted him to an entry-level customer service role, then to an assistant store manager, store manager, and today he’s a managing partner.
This means he earns a significant chunk of his shop’s net profit (with no cap).
He’s on track to make over $100,000 this year and is one of the top leaders in our company.
There are many great people in the world. It’s your job to find them, give them a shot, and develop them.
This is principle #1 of what I call the 8-Figure Franchisee Code: We build teams to create freedom.
Leadership development is at the foundation of building an 8-figure business.
Unfortunately, most franchisees get stuck here.
They’d rather stay busy doing the work than get uncomfortable firing the followers and replacing them with leaders.
But the time you invest in developing one leader saves you hundreds of hours of micromanagement later.
If this resonates, you might be a perfect fit for 8-Figure Franchisee.
I’m building a community of driven franchisees who want direct access to me and other owners who are building something significant.
Cheers!
Brian
P.S. I’m hosting our next 8-Figure Franchisee meet-up in Charlotte this September. We just opened member-only early-bird registration. Only 24 tickets available.
