NFL backyard, ad fails, & building the team

We just wrapped up our first month of production at Waterloo Turf Houston.

It’s been pretty wild so far.

Our third job was to create a mini football field in the backyard of New England Patriots wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk.

 

Digital Marketing:

This has been a bit of a rollercoaster.

At one point, we got 8 leads over a 3-day period.

Then zero over the next 10 days.

Turns out there was a credit card issue and our ads weren’t running 🤦‍♂️

We intentionally started with lean ad spend at $4-5k/month while the platforms are in “learning mode.”

We’ve just started ramping it up to $6-7k/month.

Referrals:

This is where the real money is.

My partner, Rick, is out there every day building new relationships with referral partners.

We’ve got one of the largest pool builders sending us quotes.

Plus, a landscape designer and custom home builder.

Neighbors & family members of customers have asked for quotes.

The Waterloo Turf founder (Lance) built his entire business on referrals. We will do the same.

Building The Team:

We hired a remote Project Coordinator three weeks ago.

Paula, from Colombia, has been a rockstar.

She handles every incoming lead, scheduling them for quotes within minutes.

Researching & booking us for community events.

More impressively, Rick is building a system to teach her project management.

She’ll be ordering materials, handling job costing, managing scopes, and overseeing subs — all from 2,200 miles away.

We’re going to implement the same process with our That 1 Painter business.

Once it’s finalized, I’ll share our playbook with all the Waterloo Turf & That 1 Painter franchisees. Plus all the 8-Figure Franchisee members.

Next is hiring an outside sales rep.

The ad goes live next week.

Expansion:

We’re looking at expanding into more markets outside of Houston.

For me, it’s all about having the right partners.

Rick is leveraging his military networks and relationships to find more individuals like him.

I’ll share more in-depth insights into our strategy in a follow-up email.
