Scaling A Franchise (What Nobody Tells You)

You start a franchise with a grand vision:

  • Time freedom to set your own schedule
  • Financial freedom to never worry about money
  • Location freedom to run your business anywhere

And the dream of a rockstar team running everything while you focus on the big picture.

This is exactly what I’ve built over the last 15 years: scaling a business to $45M/year that runs without my day-to-day involvement. This frees me to focus on our next milestone: $100M/year.

But here’s the truth: You can’t skip to the end.

It’s like trying to fight Bowser in Super Mario without mastering the basics. You’ll get crushed every time.

Success is a journey through three distinct phases.

Each phase has its own unique challenges to overcome.

Phase 1: “I Do It”

When you launch a franchise, you do everything: estimating, sales, project management, bookkeeping, hiring, firing, and more.

You are drinking from a firehose, trying to remember everything from training, hiring & managing employees for the first time, and worried about covering payroll weekly.

You are in survival mode.

This stage is both a blessing and a curse.

It’s a blessing that you learn every aspect of the business. You figure out what works & doesn’t. You start developing a strong reputation within the community and referral relationships with other business owners.

This builds a strong foundation.

The curse is every hour of your day is spoken for. You are exhausted every day when you go home. You don’t have time for friends or family like you envisioned.

You often say to yourself, “This is not what I signed up for.”

Unfortunately, many franchise owners never get out of this phase. They bought themselves a job which is often why franchising gets a bad rap.

But it doesn’t need to be that way. There is a clear path to break through, build a team, implement the systems, and gain freedom.

It’s All About Perspective

Within my 8-Figure Franchisee community, multiple members are #1 in their brands.

Each of them had the same perspective:

The first year was going to be a knife fight.

Their goal WAS NOT to make a million dollars but to learn the business, drive sales, and survive.

They all got punched in the face multiple times but they weren’t upset because that’s exactly what they expected to happen.

Phase 2 and 3

After you master “I do it,” you graduate to the “we do it” phase, where your team starts taking operational responsibilities off your plate.

You start to earn some freedom.

Finally, “they do it” phase is where you start to unlock unlimited income & freedom.

This is where the biggest, most profitable, multi-unit franchisees operate.

I’ll dive into the “we do it” and “they do it” phases later this week.
