Your team isn’t the problem

Your team missed their numbers again last month.

Same story. Different week.

You’re thinking: “If I just had better people, this wouldn’t happen.”

Here’s the hard truth: There are no bad teams. Only bad leaders.

Your team will never be more positive, more driven, or have higher standards than the leader.

If you show up stressed and scattered, your team shows up stressed and scattered.

If you accept “good enough,” your team accepts “good enough.”

You are the bottleneck.

Not your equipment. Not your location. Not your “terrible hires.”

You.

And this happens at every single level:

  • As the owner, I create bottlenecks for my company
  • My executives create bottlenecks for district managers
  • District managers create bottlenecks for store managers
  • Store managers create bottlenecks for technicians

The language you use matters.

Tell yourself “My team sucks” and guess what?

You’ll be 100% right.

Tell yourself “I can get better at leading them”

You’ll be right about that too.

Same team. Different internal narrative. Completely different results.

Managers complain: “They always change the oil first!”

But the process is to complete the vehicle inspection THEN do the inspection. That’s where the revenue comes from.

The problem isn’t your techs. It’s your instructions.

Say “Do this oil change,” and they’ll change the oil first.

They are literally doing what you asked

vs.

Say “Do this inspection, then change the oil” and they’ll inspect first.

Again, doing what you asked.

Most business owners get this backwards.

Performance is down, so they blame the bottom level: “My techs are slow.”

But when you’re trying to hit numbers you’ve never hit before, you don’t start with the techs.

You start with yourself.

What energy are YOU bringing?

What standards are YOU setting?

How fast are YOU moving?

If you’re frustrated and complaining, they’re frustrated and complaining.

If you’ve given up on excellence, they gave up months ago.

I’ve seen this play out hundreds of times across my locations.

The stores with high-energy, demanding managers consistently outperform.

The stores with “laid back” managers consistently underperform.

Same systems. Same training. Same franchise model.

Different leaders.

Here’s what changes everything:

Walk into your location tomorrow like you’re the most successful franchise owner in your system.

Set the pace. Set the energy. Set the standards.

Watch how fast your team responds.

Cheers!

Brian
