There is no business more essential than drain cleaning.
You can deal with no hot water for a few days.
You will NOT deal with a clogged toilet for very long.
It’s usually not a question of price – it’s a question of speed.
Drain cleaning is the definition of recession-proof, pandemic-proof, amazon-proof and AI-proof
ZOOM DRAIN is my favorite drain-cleaning franchise.
Zoom Drain Business Model
Most plumbers focus on everything above the drain such as toilets, sinks, showers, tubs, and hot water heaters.
They can handle small drain clean outs but for anything serious, they need to call in the big guns.
This is where Zoom Drain comes in. They’ve got the specialized equipment in that truck to handle ANY drain issue
- Cameras to identify the issue
- Long snakes to retrieve item
- High-pressure water to blast it away
Franchisees get customers in three ways:
Referral relationships – create referral relationships with local plumbers who don’t have the big equipment. Expect to pay them a referral fee.
Digital marketing – get in front of customers directly searching for drain cleaning.
Local business – build relationships with hospitals, nursing homes, apartment buildings, etc. with high usage. Set them up on a recurring maintenance plan to prevent major issues
I’ve been a customer of Zoom Drain for years with my Midas Auto shops.
They always respond quickly, confirm the issue using technology, provide simple flat-rate pricing to fix on the spot, and get it done.
Financial Performance
Franchisors can disclose whatever they want in “Item 19” of their FDD.
Most brands show the bare minimum (just sales)
Zoom Drain has one of the most detailed “Item 19” of any brand. My favorite part is the three tables that show the average monthly sales of franchisees who’ve been operating:
- Less than 12 months
- From 12 to 24 months
- More than 24 months
The hardest part of starting a new business is estimating cash flow in the first 12 to 24 months. The transparency in the FDD helps set expectations.
Very few brands show this data because it’s not always pretty. Sometimes, the business takes off quickly, while other times, it takes time to build.
Buying a franchise is a long-term game, not a get-rich-quick scheme. I’d rather go into a business with eyes wide open than to be completely blindsided.
They also provide a P&L for their 3 corporate-run territories in Philadelphia. They show almost $14M in revenue and $2.1M in “estimated earnings.”
Start-Up Costs
A single territory is $259k to $485k.
The investment varies depending on whether you lease or purchase the service truck. It also includes working capital, franchisee fee, grand opening marketing, and more.
Item 7 of the FDD has the full break-down
Background
The company was founded in 1995 in Philly and started franchising in 2015. They are well capitalized with private equity partners behind them.
Today have over 125+ territories sold across the country.
Franchisees don’t need plumbing experience. Most states have minimal licensing requirements for drain cleaning.
They have a state-of-the-art training facility to train you and technicians plus an acquisition program to help you buy out competitors!
